Australian Shark and Ray Centre

Want to get up close and personal with these denizens of the deep?

In The Godfather, Luca Brasi famously slept with the fishes. And that didn’t turn out too well for him, did it? So we suggest you forget that and try this instead.

At the Australian Shark and Ray Centre in Port Stephens, you can pat, feed and swim with hundreds of sharks and rays. You can go into the water with them in specially provided waterproof pants or a warm wetsuit. Or, if that idea is just a bit too intimidating, you can always feed your newfound friends from dry land.

Species on display include white spotted sharks, black stingrays, leopard sharks and shovelnose rays. “Feeding three-metre sharks or 300-kilogram rays is exciting and educational,” say the owners, who are also proud to stress that the activities are open to all. Everyone from six-month-old babies to octogenarians have entered the waters and lived to tell the tale!

The Centre also caters to schools and other group tours, visit the website to find out more.
