The Sydney Opera House is one of the country’s most recognisable buildings and is among its most popular tourist destinations, attracting over 8.2 million visitors every year. The architectural marvel is well-known for its unique shape and design, and for its colourful history and controversial construction. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the Opera House was originally estimated to cost $7 million and for construction to last for four years. Work began in 1959 and took $102 million and 14 years to complete. The result has emerged as one of the most seminal pieces of modern day architecture.

In 2007 the Opera House was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and the committee claimed, “Sydney Opera House stands by itself as one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity, not only in the 20th century, but in the history of humankind.”

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point for Australia’s performing arts and a hub for artistic creativity. Its importance in the heart of the arts community is second to none. It is one of the world’s busiest and most prestigious performing arts centres and hosts over 1500 performances annually. It is home to four resident companies – Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra – and throughout the seasons a varied world of music, dance, theatre, comedy, ideas and more, both Australian and international, pass across its numerous stages.

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, a performance aficionado or a first-timer, the Sydney Opera House has something for everyone. Catch one of the breathtaking shows, whatever your genre preference. Bring the kids for some tailor-made entertainment, with the best, and often funniest, theatre performances for the family.

The Opera House also boasts some of the best eateries, and dining views, in town. Indulge in some fine dining, laidback nibbles or pre-show drinks at one of the multitude of restaurants and bars dotted throughout the venue.

The Sydney Opera House is an experience in itself – enjoy a tour of Australia’s most distinctive building, take home a memento from the gift shop and discover the stories, history and magic of this iconic masterpiece.
